What internet connection do I need for IPTV?

One of the most common questions we get from new users is how fast an internet connection you actually need to stream IPTV without issues. The answer depends on the quality you want to watch in and how many devices you use simultaneously — but most modern broadband connections handle it without any problems.

QualityRecommended speedUse case
SD (480p)5 Mbit/sOlder devices, mobile on 4G
HD (720p)10 Mbit/sGood for most situations
Full HD (1080p)20 Mbit/sRecommended for TV screens
4K (UHD)50 Mbit/sLarge screens, best quality

Tips

Measure your actual speed at fast.com or speedtest.net before choosing a quality setting in the app. The measured speed can differ significantly from what you're paying for.

Multiple devices at the same time

Do you have several people at home streaming on separate devices? Multiply the speed by the number of devices:

Number of devicesRecommended total speed
1 device (Full HD)20 Mbit/s
2 devices (Full HD)40 Mbit/s
3 devices (Full HD)60 Mbit/s
1 device (4K)50 Mbit/s
2 devices (4K)100 Mbit/s

Remember that other activities in the home — such as gaming, video calls and downloads — also use bandwidth. Add a buffer of 20–30% to be on the safe side.

WiFi or cable?

It's not just about speed — stability is equally important for IPTV. A fast but unstable WiFi connection gives worse results than a slower but stable wired connection.

Connection typeStabilityRecommended for IPTV
Ethernet (cable)ExcellentYes — always first choice
WiFi 6 (ax)Very goodYes, if close to router
WiFi 5 (ac)GoodYes, with reservations
WiFi 4 (n)AdequateSD/HD only
4G/5G mobileVariesAs backup

Varning

Do you live in a house with thick walls or multiple floors? WiFi signal weakens significantly with distance and through walls. A wired connection is strongly recommended in such cases.

What happens if the connection is too slow?

If your internet connection isn't up to scratch you'll notice it in one or more of the following ways:

  • Buffering — the picture freezes and reloads at regular intervals
  • Pixelation — the picture looks like a jigsaw puzzle with large blocks
  • Black screen — the stream loses the connection entirely
  • Automatic quality reduction — the app selects a lower resolution to compensate

If you experience any of the above, see our buffering guide for concrete troubleshooting tips.

Is mobile broadband enough?

Many people use a 4G or 5G router at home instead of fixed broadband. It works well for IPTV under the right conditions:

  • 5G — More than sufficient for 4K on multiple devices
  • 4G — Works well for HD and Full HD, 4K can be challenging
  • 3G — SD only, and not stable enough for live broadcasts

Info

Mobile broadband can vary greatly depending on the time of day and how many people are sharing the mast. In the evenings and at weekends speeds can drop significantly in densely populated areas.

Tips for maximising your connection

  1. Use a wired connection for your primary streaming device
  2. Place the router centrally in the home for the best WiFi coverage
  3. Upgrade to WiFi 6 if you have many devices
  4. Use a mesh network if you have a large home with poor coverage
  5. Turn off unused devices that are using bandwidth in the background
  6. Contact your internet provider if the speed is consistently lower than promised

Frequently asked questions

I have 100 Mbit/s but it still buffers — why?

A high nominal speed doesn't guarantee stable streaming. The problem is often WiFi instability, an overloaded home network or speed that varies significantly. Test with a wired connection and measure the speed directly at the device.

Does IPTV work on mobile data?

Yes, but be mindful of your data consumption. One hour of Full HD streaming uses approximately 3–5 GB of data. Choose HD quality instead of 4K on mobile to save data.

Does a VPN affect my streaming speed?

Yes, almost always. A VPN adds an extra step to the connection and can reduce speed by 20–50% depending on the server and protocol. Turn off VPN if you experience buffering.

Which internet provider is best for IPTV?

Fibre is always the best option regardless of provider. Most fibre providers offer more than sufficient speed and stability for 4K streaming on multiple devices simultaneously.

Summary

  • Full HD requires at least 20 Mbit/s, 4K at least 50 Mbit/s per device
  • Multiply the speed by the number of devices streaming simultaneously
  • A wired connection is always better than WiFi for IPTV
  • High nominal speed isn't enough — stability is equally important
  • Measure your actual speed at fast.com to get a true picture
